  2.          WHAT'S MULTIMEDIA?
  3.   Multimedia is the attempt to make your personal computer 
  4. overwhelm your senses by feeding you text, music, voice, 
  5. graphics, animation, and video movies on the screen all 
  6. simultaneously! To do that well, you need a fast computer (at 
  7. least an Intel 486 or a Mac Quadra 630) with a CD-ROM drive and 
  8. some circuitry to handle sounds well.
  9.   Microsoft's most famous example of multimedia is Microsoft 
  10. Encarta. It's a CD-ROM disk that contains the complete text of 
  11. the 29-volume Funk & Wagnalls encyclopedia, supplemented by 1000 
  12. extra articles, 8 hours of sound, written & spoken samples of 60 
  13. languages, 7800 photos and illustrations, 100 animations and 
  14. video clips, 800 maps, plus more. Using Encarta is fun: using 
  15. your mouse, just click on whatever topic on the screen interests 
  16. you and ___ whammo! ___ you see it and hear it. Discount dealers 
  17. sell it for just $70.
  18.   Inspired by Encarta's success, Microsoft has gone on to develop 
  19. other multimedia titles that are more specific. For example, 
  20. Cinemania is a CD-ROM that contains over 19,000 movie reviews 
  21. written by Leonard Maltin, Roger Ebert, Pauline Kael, and 
  22. Baseline, plus biographies of nearly 4,000 performers and other 
  23. film-biz folks, plus some photographs, audio tracks, video clips, 
  24. and stills. Discount dealers sell it for just $53.
  25.   Microsoft has also done multimedia titles on topics such as 
  26. Beethoven's 9th Symphony (including detailed analysis of the 
  27. music, the man, and his times), Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, 
  28. works by Mozart & Shubert, London's National Gallery of Art, and 
  29. baseball lore.

  34. created by companies such as Microsoft can be fun, it's even more 
  35. fun to create your own!
  36.                                          Most software purporting 
  37. to help you create multimedia is tedious to use and expensive. 
  38. But here's the exception: buy Magic Theatre, a CD-ROM disk 
  39. published by two companies working together (Knowledge Adventure 
  40. Inc. and Instinct Corporation). Comp USA sells it for just $35.

  42. animated cartoons with sound, so easily that you can create 
  43. exciting cartoons after just a few seconds of preparation!

  45. you'll learn how to use it in just a few minutes.
  46.                                          The $35 price even 
  47. includes a microphone, accompanied by a CD-ROM disk that includes 
  48. lots of clip art, pre-made animated objects, music, and sound 
  49. effects, which you can combine in just a few seconds to produce 
  50. an on-screen animated movie that you'll like a lot better than 
  51. Saturday morning cartoons ___ especially since you created it!

  53. produce will seem child-like, but that's their charm!
